Ferocactus wislizenii ARIZONA FISH HOOK BARREL
True cactus enthusiasts are "barreled over" by these ancient, massive sentinels of the desert that can grow as tall as 6 feet and weigh hundreds of pounds. Each main spine emerging from the aereoles along the heavy ribs are perfectly hook shaped, broad, and heavy. The shape of the plant when younger is more globular, but older specimens achieve a thick columnar form. Each spring and summer, the top is crowned with a ring of interesting yellow flowers that change towards red as they age each day. Later, large, puffy, light yellow/green fruits are formed that are full of masses of small black seeds. Spines are red and pink as they emerge from the growing center. This is an heirloom plant that can achieve great age, and can be handed down from generation to generation. Full sun. Must have good drainage, especially on the coastal plain where it is cooler. Great as a specimen potted plant; hardy to low 20s. Will die indoors, although the process is slow. Appreciates some extra water and fertilizer during the hot summer months, but always allow brief dry intervals between waterings.
