Opuntia fulgida
CHAIN CHOLLA
This is a tall, cylindrical stemmed, branching cactus that has small, brilliant carmen/hot-purple flowers that form a fattened up green fruit. Strangely though, the fruits on this cactus rarely ripen, rather they remain on the plant and bud out with, and bear more, fruits that continue the process until there are whole chains of the little green globes that may have accumulated over some years. Instead of ever producing seeds in the fruits, they eventually fall to the ground, form roots, and sprout a new cactus plant to grow up and start all over again! Grows to 6' tall x 3' wide. Hardy to low teens, can be grown from the coastal plain to hot inland deserts. Best planted in a desert landscape, as they are a little too large for containers.
