Bulbine frutescens BULBINE
This is a "grass-like" succulent with bright, fresh green leaves growing 6-8 inches tall and bearing hundreds of slender flower stems covered with brilliant lemon yellow flowers (as in the variety "Lemon Cooler") or a cheerful orange and yellow combination (the variety "Candy Corn Orange"), from early spring throughout most of the summer. Flowering takes a break at the end of summer, then kicks in sporadically as the cooler months of fall arrive. Bulbine is extremely drought tolerant when established, naturalizing easily on our existing rainfall. In situations of additional watering, must be on a slope or in well-drained soils. The only maintenance that seems necessary is to occasionally "weed whack" down the copius amount of spent flowers stems, after which new ones emerge within just a week or two to start the process all over. Great in small masses or "flows" for spectacular color!
